
Povezanost motoričkih i kognitivnih sposobnosti potvrđena je i putem brojnih istraživanja koja su rađena kod dece sa kognitivnim poremećajima (deca sa poremećajem pažnje i hiperaktivnosti, disleksija, autizam), gde se pokazalo da ta deca najčešće imaju probleme i u prostoru motorike (Kadesjo & Gillberg, 1998; Hill, Bishop, & Nimmo-Smith, 1998; Piek, Pitcher, & Hay, 1999). Ovakva saznanja ukazuju da su motorički i kognitivni razvoj verovatno međusobno fundamentalno povezani (Diamond, 2000) i govore o potrebi obezbeđivanja uslova za ravnomeran razvoj dece i omladine.
Iako su se istraživači iz oblasti fizičke kulture u našoj zemlji često bavili proučavanjem veza između kognitivnih i motoričkih sposobnosti, zanimljivo je da nije bilo pokušaja da se u vezu dovedu pomenute sposobnosti sa aspekta neuronauka, koje su u zadnje dve dekade došle do fascinantnih otkrića o moždanoj aktivnosti za vreme fizičkog napora. Nove, sofisticirane tehnologije (fMRI, MSI, PET, EEG itd.) i neinvazivne metode snimanja mozga, omogućile su dobijanje detaljnih slika moždane aktivnosti na molekularnom nivou in vivo, čime su napravljeni veliki koraci ka potpunijem razumevanju procesa i promena koje nastaju u mozgu.
